The new season started with the men's 1s travelling to play Sunderland Broom away, a place they have struggled to get results in recent years.
The match started well for the 1s with good pressure being applied to the Sunderland team. An early chance for Davison after some good work from Duffy went wide as JPC kept the tempo up.
Eventually JPC won a short corner. Clarke received the ball at the top of the D and finished exquisitely into the bottom corner to give the 1s their first goal and first lead of the season.
Sadly the lead didn't last long though as despite some good defending from Moore, Nicholson (now sporting his Bane inspired mask of intimidation), Davies and Baker Sunderland struck back to level match.
With the the first half drawing to a close Robertson won the ball in the centre of midfield and went on a deadly run down the right hand side of the attack. Having outpaced the defender and working the ball into the box he beat the keeper and squared it to Davison for a simple finish into the empty net. 2-1 and JPC were back on top.
Half time came and after some strong words from Heyward and Greenshields the boys were ready.
After some tense early exchanges in the second half JPC once again won a short corner and than man Clarke again made no mistake and thundered the ball into the bottom corner to extend the lead. Sunderland had obviously had enough of Dan scoring so shortly after their right back hit the ball straight into his kneecap. JPC feared the worst as he was carried off the pitch, tears streaming down his near unconscious face.
This obviously distracted JPC and with Dan in the middle protecting the defense as he had been with Nick JPC were exposed and quickly conceded 2 goals. Greenshields was furious as he had been making numerous saves prior to this to preserve JPCs lead.
Having dried his face Dan returned to the game and continued to link up expertly with Andy, Craig and Euan (back from a year long absence) on the wings.
The game looked destined for a draw. In the final minute the ball fell to Davison on the right edge of the Sunderland D. Hearing shouts of "Top D! Top D!" From Robertson he blindly played the pass across. For once Stephen wasn't exaggerating with his call and was there waiting with a first time slap through and crowd of players and into the bottom corner. What a finish! And what a way to start the season, made even better by the deep fried sausage and chips for teas after!
Clarke was awarded player of the match for excellent work all over the pitch. A great win.
